The Spanish revolution in the 1930s captured the attention of working people around the world. In the midst of the fascist victory in Germany, and with war clouds gathering over Europe, workers and peasants in Spain opened a series of revolutionary battles that challenged the rule of the wealthy landlord and capitalist class. Their struggles showed a road out of the wars and economic crises of capitalism.

The Spanish rulers, with support from other imperialist powers, turned to General Francisco Franco's military and fascist forces to strike back against the proletarian revolution. They were aided by the counterrevolutionary efforts and thuggery of the Stalinist leadership of the Communist Party, and by the refusal of anarchist and centrist forces to lead the rising working class and peasant masses to establish a government of the exploited majority.
